Community Connections:
Helping children feel they belong in their Gold Coast community
Community is where children begin to understand that they belong. The first time a child waves to a familiar face, shares a story with someone new or discovers that the world beyond their family is filled with people who care, they begin to see themselves as part of something bigger.
Before children understand communities as a concept, they experience them through relationships: the people who welcome them, the conversations they share and the moments where they begin to recognise that they are part of something beyond their immediate family.
Why community connections matter in early childhood
At Enrich Early Education on the Gold Coast, community experiences are part of our educational curriculum. These experiences help children develop confidence, curiosity and social awareness.
Through visits from local firefighters, connections with older generations through our Grand Friends program and opportunities to learn from local professionals such as the dentist, children experience the wider community as a place filled with people who care, contribute and connect.
Real-life learning experiences like this help children build confidence, curiosity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Seeing children’s faces light up as they realise the people they see in books are part of their real world too
Community experiences through an Emotional Intelligence and Montessori lens
At Enrich, these experiences are not simply special events added to the calendar. They are opportunities for children to learn through real-life activities and practice their social-emotional skills, and build empathy and confidence.
For example, when meeting a firefighter, the children have to balance their excitement with the uncertainty of meeting someone new. Speaking with older community members invites the children to have patience, listen and show empathy. Our annual dentist visit provides a great opportunity for our children to practice asking questions, show confidence and work on healthy habits.

Community Connection Program
Community helpers
Learning from local Gold Coast professionals
Community helpers play an important role in children’s understanding of the world. Meeting firefighters from the Southport Fire and Rescue Department, healthcare professionals, and other local visitors allows children to ask questions, develop confidence and see how different people contribute to keeping our community safe and connected.
Firefighter visit at Enrich. Helping children learn about community safety
The excitement was impossible to miss. “Yay! The fire truck is coming!” 🚒 one child called as the big red fire truck drove up to our child care centre. Together with the firefighters, the children explored fire safety, learnt about the important role firefighters play in our community and had the opportunity to hold a real fire hose. Beyond the excitement of the truck and sirens, the experience supported confidence, curiosity and children’s understanding of the people who help care for our community.
Dentist visit at Enrich. Helping children build healthy habits
Visiting professionals provide children with opportunities to learn through real conversations and experiences. Our local dentist visit helped children become familiar with oral health in a relaxed and engaging way, encouraging curiosity and confidence around caring for their bodies.
Community Connection is about the people we meet, the stories we share and the connections children carry with them
Intergenerational relationships
Grand Friends Program. Building relationships between generations
Our Pre-Prep children visit their Grand Friends in Ashmore Gardens Care Community. A visit that both the children and their Grand Friends look forward to each time.
Through shared stories, conversations and activities, children experience the joy of connecting with older members of our community while developing empathy, respect and social confidence.
Meanwhile, it’s also a highlight of many of our Grand Friends’ week. They, too, benefit from social interactions, communicating and connecting with other people, and the enriching activities they engage in.
Families sharing their stories, cultures and passions
Special visits from our young learners' families
Learning about First Nations culture and heritage
Over recent years, we’ve had a very special visit from our young learners’ father and from Anthony, a local Aboriginal artist, cultural performer and community member, to learn more about First Nations culture and heritage.
Through storytelling, bush tucker experiences, cultural activities, and meaningful conversations, the children explored the rich cultures, histories, and traditions of First Nations peoples in hands-on, respectful ways.
Real-life practical experiences: Pizza making in Pre-Prep
The pre-prep children enjoyed a pizza-making experience by the talented chefs of Gemelli restaurants! Activities like this are truly Montessori-inspired. It’s a wonderful way for the children to learn that there’s truly nothing better than enjoying a meal made with your own hands. To top of a beautiful afternoon making pizza’s from scratch, the chefs brought a delicious treat with them for dessert.
