Group time is where our day gently anchors. It begins with our Acknowledgment to Country, grounding ourselves in gratitude and respect. Followed by a chat about our identity photos. This strengthens the children’s sense of self and belonging. Each group time, we sing emotion focused songs to work on their phonics. These comforting rhythms help the children feel safe and seen.

We listened to a story called “The Bear and the Picnic Lunch”. It sparked a conversation about kindness and sharing food with friends, which helps children build empathy and social skills. Today’s intentional learning focus was on grace and courtesy. During the activity, we practices serving ourselves and our friends a drink by using a tray. An activity focused on not only practical life skills but also kindness, respect and motor skills. 

Group time is not about sitting still. It’s about coming together, sharing ideas, and building a sense of ‘we’. Montessori group time adds a splash of togetherness to a child-led day.

Happy Feet Dance Class

Our day finished with laughter and movement during Happy Feet Dance Class. Through music, dance, and storytelling, the children explored ‘road safety’ concepts. Recognising pedestrian crossings, waiting for signals, and practising how to cross safely.

Every child received their on steering wheel to pretend drive a car! As the children ‘drove around’, they learned about how traffic lights work. These playful lessons are designed to help children build essential life skills in a way that truly sticks.

Happy Feet Dance Class is a much-loved part of our Activity Program and is included as a complimentary experience for all enrolled children. It offers a beautiful opportunity for children to express themselves, build confidence, and learn through the joy of dance.

Hands-on Montessori learning

The Gemelli team brought a fragrant selection of fresh toppings—basil, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, sliced zucchini, and, of course, plenty of cheese! Our little chefs enjoyed rolling the dough, spreading the tomato base, and layering on their favourite toppings.

Making pizzas from scratch isn’t just a fun cooking activity. It teaches children essential life skills—from turn-taking and practicing patience to developing social skills while discussing which toppings to add and passing ingredients and tools to their friends.

A child-led and sensory-rich experience

Hands-on activities such as pizza-baking are child-led, sensory-rich, and structured, allowing children to make their own choices and express their creativity. It fits our Montessori-inspired approach and it helps children develop focus, responsibility, independence, confidence, and self-discipline —key skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Selecting the right toys from a Montessori perspective

The toys we use at Enrich (or resources, as we prefer to call them) are Montessori-based, open-ended resources. We intentionally select resources designed to develop one specific skill or learning objective at a time. As the child masters this skill, they are presented with additional resources that build on and extend the skill.

Why Montessori-inspired resources?

Our educators mindfully present each resource, gathering the children around to demonstrate how to use the activity and encouraging them to take turns exploring the resource. This encourages children to develop a stronger curiosity about the resource and will likely enable them to explore the activity for longer.

Maximise the benefits of Montessori-inspired toys at home with these steps:

Purposeful selection:

When purchasing a new toy, you can ask yourself, “What skill is this going to develop in my child?” When we look at toys as learning materials, we can start to appreciate the education our child is gaining from each resource while having fun.

Intentional introduction:

When introducing a new toy to your child, do so purposefully. Choose a time when your child is feeling good and wants to learn. It might not be the best time if they’re tired or hungry. Sit on the floor in a quiet space. Place the resource on the floor in front of them. Show how to use it with slow, exaggerated movements. When introducing a new resource, it’s helpful to, at first, show without telling. If you speak while showing, it’s more difficult for your child to absorb both the words and actions simultaneously.

Embrace mistakes:

Making intentional mistakes while playing with the toy shows your child that making mistakes is okay. For example, if using a shape-sorting toy, intentionally fit the wrong shape into a hole. This teaches the child that finding the solution is a process of trial and error.

Encourage exploration:

Then, it’s time to pass the resource over to the child. Allow them to take the lead and explore the toy independently while you’re observing quietly. Only step in when they are truly stuck. We get it; it feels natural to step in and help when we see our child struggling. Yet, it’s important to allow them to figure it out on their own as much as possible. This builds their problem-solving skills and confidence.

Creating inviting spaces in your home

We believe in creating cozy, inspiring, and inviting spaces that encourage children to explore and follow their interests. That doesn’t mean you need a complete home renovation; it’s about intentionally setting up welcoming & safe areas for your child.

Problem-solving

Children love challenges and solving minor problems, such as deciding which step to climb, how to reach the top or what to do when it’s busy at the swings. Outdoor play gives children the chance to think critically, assess their own abilities, and try different strategies — all on their own terms.

Building social and emotional skills

Playgrounds are natural social hubs. They teach children how to take turns, cooperate, speak up, and listen to one another. A child might feel joy when it’s their turn on the slide or frustration when they have to wait. This all teaches them how to manage their emotions, communicate with empathy and build friendships.

Sensory-rich learning experiences

Outdoor play engages all five senses: feeling the warmth of the sun, seeing the clouds, hearing the birds chirp, smelling the flowers, feeling the rough bark under their feet and if they’re lucky, tasting something yummy from the garden.

Outdoor play is great for practicing Emotional Intelligence 

Outdoor play offers rich opportunities for emotionally intelligent learning. Children practise patience when waiting their turn, resilience when they fall and try again, and empathy when they check if a friend is okay. While playing outside, the children often experience big feelings. As all our educators are EQ-trained, they can offer gentle guidance in managing their emotions and adopt a strong mindset.

So the next time your child is running barefoot across the grass, trying to hang from the monkey bars, or picking herbs from the garden, remember: They’re not just playing, they’re learning, growing, and becoming who they’re meant to be.
